  5. In order to get a Hayes V9600 v.42 to communicate at anything above 2400, you
  6. need to make a few changes.
  7.  
  8. This is what needs to be done (a '*' means that the command is necessary for the
  9. BBS to work properly, in most cases):
  10. (Note: this is for a Red Ryder Host board on a Macintosh.  Your BBS program may
  11. be slightly different.)
  12.  
  13. Needed    Type:                Meaning:
  14. ------    -----                --------
  15.     *    AT&F            Factory settings, clearing modem.
  16.     ATL1 or ATE0        The first lowers the speaker volume, the second
  17.                     disables sound.
  18.     ATE0            Disable character echo for commands.
  19.     *    AT&C1            Monitor Carrier line.
  20.     AT&D3            Monitor DTR line.  With this option set, you
  21.                     can use a 'DTR hangup', where your BBS
  22.                     will only need to drop DTR to hang up.
  23.     AT&S1            Monitor DSR line.
  24.     *    AT&K0            No flow control.
  25.     *    ATS0=1            Auto Answer, first ring.
  26.     *    AT&W0            Store these settings in user profile 0.

  28. Now, to Init your modem, you need to type:
  29.     ATZ            Partial reset.
  30.  
  31. A Hayes V9600 v.42 modem is compatable with:
  32.     Hayes V9600 or Hayes V9600 v.42
  33.     USR HST Dual Standard
  34.     Prometheus 9600
  35.     Telebit Trailblazer, new edition
  36.     ... and any other standard 9600 bps modem.
  37. A Hayes V9600 v.42 modem is NOT compatable with:
  38.     UST HST
  39.     Telebit Trailblazer, old edition
  40.     ...and any other non-standard 9600 bps modem.

  42. If you have a Hayes V9600 (old edition):
  43.     You can upgrade to a V9600 v.42 free of charge by sending your modem
  44. back to Hayes, asking them to upgrade it.  There are MANY special deals for
  45. SysOps of Hayes V9600's (you get $25 for every V2400 upgrade you sell, a free
  46. modem for every 4 V9600's you sell, or a V9600 itself for $400).  Your users
  47. also get discounts on any mail-order-from-Hayes stuff, including a $300
  48. discount to upgrade a 2400 Smartmodem to a V2400 (double or triple speed.)
  49. Let Hayes know your a SysOp and ask about this stuff!

  51. Communicating at 2400 or below:
  52.     In order to communicate easier at 2400 or below, it is recommended that
  53. you turn off the special Hayes error checking.  You can do this with a AT&Q0.
  54. Type AT&Q5 to get back.  If the other modem is a Hayes V series, then leave
  55. error checking on, otherwise turn it off.

  57. Recommended settings:
  58.     In personal use, this is what I'd recommend using with your Hayes V9600:
  59.  
  60.     Terminal program:    Microphone ][ (for Macintosh)
  61.     Speed:            19200 (will automatically drop if less)
  62.     Protocol:        XMODEM 1K or ZMODEM.
  63.     Settings:        Put "Hardware Handshake" ON in the
  64.                     communications options.
  65.     Other:            The smaller you make your terminal window, the
  66.                     less time the computer takes to update
  67.                     the screen.
  68.     Bugs:            ATZ doesn't reset to config 1 even if the AT&Y1 is set.
